Since the electricity bill hike on July 1, the total power consumption in Yangon Region has declined by around 22 million units, according to a press conference by the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) on September 9.

In late June, the total power consumption in Yangon reached 717 million units, down 21.9 million units compared with 695 million units in late July.

The YESC collected Ks over 36,881 million in electricity bill even though 1.8 million people reduced their power consumption.

“As the power bill is increased, the people have started reducing their power consumption rates. The power bill hike enables the people to minimize the power usage and use power in a disciplined manner,” said Maung Maung Latt, Chair of the YESC.

Aung Kyaw Oo, a member of the BOD  and acting CEO of YESC said: “The normal daily power consumption in Yangon Region has reduced by 150 MW, according to the records. We can supply power without the construction of a 150-MW power plant. The YESC could purchase 1,000 MW for the coming summer, using money earned from the power bill hike.

The YESC is supplying power to the people in 45 townships in Yangon Region, buying power from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy at a price of Ks 110 per unit. The YESC collects Ks 35 for one-200 units and Ks 125 for above 200 units.
