Yangon General Hospital opens a new cancer treatment unit on January 13 which can accept more than 300 cancer patients according to Ministry of Health and Sports.

"The aim of opening the extended new cancer treatment unit is Department of Radiotherapy normally can accept 80 beds. But, there are an average of 200 patients being hospitalized daily. As a result, patients have to sleep on the benches. By opening this new five storey building, it will create more comfortable places for patients and they can undergone treatment with convenience of mind and body," said Dr. Khin Cho Win, Heads of Department of Radiotherapy of Yangon General Hospital.

This new building was begun its construction in 2015 and cost more than Ks.300 million.

The first storey is for out-patients department, the second  and third floor are for patients from Radiology department and the fourth and the fifth floors are for cancer treatment.

At present, about 250 to 300 cancer patients are being treated per day and among them, about 40 patients are new cancer patients. In general, the Cancer Department of Yangon General Hospital has an average cancer patients of 3000 to 4000 per year. According to the statistics of the hospital, breast cancer, colon cancer and stomach cancer commonly found out in women and lungs cancer, and stomach cancer are commonly found out in men.

Besides, half of the cancer patients hospitalized at the Yangon General Hospital are women according to the cancer department.
