Wind energy feasibility studies have been conducted in three regions and six states, said Dr. Tun Naing, Deputy Minister for Electricity and Energy.

The deputy minister replied to the question raised by MP Bwe Khein representing Chin State Constituency-3 about a plan to implement a wind power plant in Chin State, at the session of upper house parliament on November 16.

The ministry conducted feasibility studies in Tanintharyi, Mon, Kayin, Shan and Kayah in cooperation with Thailand-based Gunkul Engineering Public Co., Ltd and in Rakhine, Ayeyawady and Yangon with Singapore-based Asia Ecoenergy Development and a citizen-owned company, Primus Advanced Technologies Ltd.

In addition, the ministry conducted feasibility studies in Chin, Rakhine and Ayeyawady with China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC).

“Myanmar has set a goal of reaching the nationwide electricity access by 2030. With the aim of satisfying the rising power demand, the ministry is working to generate power through the available sources including the renewable energy—hydropower, solar and wind power,” the deputy minister added.

The CTGC installed eight towers to measure wind speeds in Lawlan in Chin, Yebawgyi in Rakhine, Chaungtha in Ayeyawady and Taungtat and Wharthinkha in Yangon and Asia Eco-energy Development and Primus Advanced Technologies Ltd, six towers in Ann, Thandwe and Gwa in Rakhine, he continued.

Currently, the ministry has no plan to build the wind power plants in Myanmar.
