Voter turnout in November by-election hits 42.42 pc

There were 902,750 eligible voters in the 2018 by-election and the voter turnout hit 42.42 per cent, according to the statement by Union Election Commission (UEC) on November 14.

On November 3, the UEC held the by-election for 13 vacant seats—four lower house parliamentary seats, one upper house parliamentary seat and eight region and state parliamentary seats.

The voter turnout for four lower house parliamentary seats is 67.73 per cent in Kanpetlet constituency, 41.07 per cent in Myingyan constituency, 33.23 per cent in Tamwe Constituency and 31.58 per cent in Lechar Constituency. The voter turnout for the Kachin State Upper House constituency-2 is 34.16 per cent in, according to the UEC.

The voter turnout for region and state parliamentary seats is 65.63 per cent in Matupi Constituency-1, 57.33 per cent in Tamu Constituency-2, 47.96 per cent in Ottwin Constituency-1, 55.15 per cent in Minbu Constituency-2, 42.70 per cent in Thabeikkyin Constituency-1, 58.28 per cent in Yathaedaung Constituency-2, 65.06 per cent in Seikkan Constituency-2 and 42.26 per cent in Shan Ethnic Affairs Constituency for Mandalay Region parliament.

There were 839,054 eligible voters for 13 constituencies in the 2015 general election and the voter turnout was 71.66 per cent.

The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) secured seven out of 13 vacant seats in the by-Election held on November 3.

The NLD won Tamwe Township Constituency, Minbu Township Constituency-2, Ottwin Township Constituency-1, Shan Ethnic Affairs parliament seat for Mandalay Region, Thabeikkyin Township Constituency-1, Myingyan Township Constituency and Kanpetlet Constituency.

The opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) secured three vacant seats—Seikkan Township Constituency-2, Kachin State Upper House Constituency-2 and Tamu Township Constituency-2. Chin League for Democracy (CLD) won Matupi Township Constituency-1. Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) secured a lower house parliamentary seat in Lechar Township Constituency. Independent candidate U Tin Maung Win, son of Dr. Aye Maung, won Yathaedaung Township Constituency-2.
