The Union Election Commission announced 79 seats to be elected in the Amyotha Hluttaw constituencies in the 2025 multiparty general election on January 29.
According to the announcement, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won 56 of the 79 seats in the Amyotha Hluttaw, while the National Unity Party (NUP) won 10 seats, the People’s Party (PP) won four seats, and seven ethnic parties won nine seats through the proportional representation (PR) system.
The seats that ethnic parties won under the PR system in the Amyotha Hluttaw were: one seat won by the Tai-Leng National Development Party (TNDP) and one seat won by the Kachin State People’s Party (KSPP) in Kachin State, two seats won by the Karen National Democratic Party (KNDP), one seat won by the Phalon-Sawaw Democratic Party (PSDP), one seat won by the Pa-O National Unity Party in Kayin State, and one seat won by the Shan and Nationalities Democratic Party (White Tiger Party) and two seats won by the Pa-O National League (PNO) in Shan State.
In addition, under the Amyotha Hluttaw PR system, the NUP won one seat in Sagaing Region, two seats in Ayeyawady Region, two seats in Bago Region, three seats in Mandalay Region, two seats in Tanintharyi Region and the People’s Party won one seat in Tanintharyi Region, and three seats in Yangon Region.
According to the UEC’s previous results released on January 17, the USDP won 52 seats in 78 Amyotha Hluttaw constituencies.
Therefore, of the 168 seats in the Amyotha Hluttaw, the Union Solidarity and Development Party won 108 seats, followed by the National Unity Party with 16 seats. The Mon Unity Party and the People’s Party each secured five seats, while the Zomi National Party, the Arakan Front Party, and the Karen National Democratic Party won three seats each. The Pa-O National Organization (PNO) won two seats. In addition, the “Wa” National Party, the Rakhine Nationalities Party, the Naga National Party, the Tai-Leng National Development Party, the Kachin State People’s Party, the Phalon-Sawaw Democratic Party, the Pa-O National Unity Party, the Shan and Nationalities Democratic Party (White Tiger Party), the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), the National Interest Development Party, the Danu National Democracy Party, and the Kayah State People’s Party each won one seat in the Amyotha Hluttaw.
