Plans are underway to open offices of the Union Legal Supporting Group in various regions and states in near future, said its chairman Nyan Win on Thursday.

Currently, there is only one office in Nay Pyi Taw and more will be opened in other regions and states.

"We have opened only the central office in Nay Pyi Taw. We are trying to open up branches in all regions. But there might be some difficulties. Our group was established by the government," said Nyan Win.

A meeting took place at the Nay Pyi Taw head office on October 31 for the selection of officers to be able to serve at office of the Union Legal Supporting Group.

The meeting discussed cooperation with international organizations, signing of memorandums of understanding, future tasks for the group, and the opening of offices in regions and states.

Advocate Khin May Wan said justice centres had been opened in regions and states to support those needy people who cannot afford hiring lawyers in legal cases but the number is not enough. She commented the opening of more offices of the Union Legal Supporting Group will contribute much towards the rule of law.

"We need legal experts now. In rural areas, farmers are the most vulnerable party. They suffer because they don't have knowledge of legal matters. The opening of such offices and centres across the country will be beneficial to our people," the lawyer said.

With the aid from the European Union and under  the supervision of the British Council, justice centers are running in Taungoo, Taunggyi, Kalaw, Hpa-an, Mawlamyine, Yangon, Mandalay and  Nay Pyi Taw to hire lawyers free of charge for needy people in legal cases.
