UN SG’s Special Envoy arrives in Sittwe

A delegation led by Ms. Christine Schraner Burgener, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar arrived in Sittwe of Rakhine State on January 22 where she held meetings with the Rakhine State government and officials of Rakhine State parliament.

Both sides cordially exchanged views on the ongoing fights between the Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army (AA) and measures to be taken by the parliament over the conditions of IDPs, health, education and social conditions of IDPs, assistance provided by the Rakhine State government and other organizations, difficulties they are facing when delivering assistance, employment opportunities of ethnic youths, rule of law and the illegal re-entry of Bengalis who fled to Bangladesh, into Rakhine State.

In addition, Christine Schraner Burgener sought opinions from the deputy speaker of Rakhine State parliament on measures to be taken for the peace, stability and development and aid program in Rakhine State.

The tour will take place from 22 to 24 January. She will also visit Maungdaw Township.

In June, 2018, she visited Rakhine State. During this tour, she also met with Bengalis from Thetkalpyin in Sittwe and Hindus, Mro and Bengalis in Maungdaw Township.
