According to the new amendments to drug laws, addicts will no longer be taken penal action against and as a result, there may be increase in treatment and rehabilitation works.

Myo Sett Aung, Deputy Director General of the department of rehabilitation from the Ministry of Social Welfare, relief and resettlement, said so at a ceremony of raising capacity for drugs addicts held at the Shwe San Eain Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on December 17.

“In the past, even if the drugs addicts knew that and suffered socially, financially, careers and health - they did not have the chance to go through rehabilitation centers because they would be punished according to the law. As a result, the drug users become trapped in the cycle of drug abuse. Now that the government is amending the drugs law, users may no longer taken by action against. Therefore, treatment and rehabilitation centers play important roles. To sum up, the Ministry of Social Welfare, relief and resettlement will have a lot of work to do,” said Myo Sett Aung.

He continued to say that drug addiction and related issues have become a big issue as it affects the development of a country. It is saddening to see that the youth, vital to country’s productivity, become victims of drugs.

The Ministry is working to give treatment and rehabilitation works at the same time. He added that the Ministry will coordinate with related organizations to implement the work.
