KALAY- As it is the election campaign period in India, trade had halted due to closure of India-Myanmar border, according to the locals from Tamu Township.

“There are many states in India. It is the election campaign period in Manipur State starting from April 8th to 11th. The crowd gathered at the downtown. So, the police are now carrying out security measures and they already close the border gate. Now, there is no trading in border. Sometimes, the hawkers from Tamu Township are being allowed going to Moreh, India- Myanmar border area. I think, no Myanmar hawkers are allowed on April 11th because April 11th is their election day. Likewise, India sellers will not be allowed going to Myanmar side. No.2 tollgate will be closed officially on the same day. About seven soldiers are now guarding at the temporary gate,” said Thurain from Tamu Township.

India-Myanmar border trading is being carried out between Tamu Township, Sagaing Region and Rihkhawdar Township, Chin State.

Areca nuts and other products are mainly imported from Tamu to India through No.1 gate.

India-Myanmar border gate closed since April 8th and No.2 border gate also shut on April 9th. Due to the closure of the border gates, the trade in Nan Phar Lon Market came to a halt since the beginning of early April.
