Tertiary education must contribute to regional, national, global interests: education minister

University teaching materials, pedagogy and cooperation with international universities and organizations should be applied to regional, national and global interests, said Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi

The minister made the remark during the silver jubilee of Dagon University held in Yangon Region on December 26.

He also stressed the need for encouragement of writing research work in local and foreign research journals based on the results from doing research.

Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein, who also graced the ceremony, said it is necessary to open student unions on the university campuses, adding that they should not be regarded as organizations that always stir problems with administration and faculty members, according to Yangon Region Government Facebook page.

"There must be student unions on the school campuses. We should not regard a student union as a problematic organization for administration and faculty members. Those belonging to a student union must be responsible for reform, said the chief minister.

He said student unions must work for school development and serve as big contributors to their schools.

He also urged teachers serving in the Ministry of Education to create better ideas for the development of the country's education system.

Also present at the anniversary were Yangon Region Minister for Social Affairs Naingngan Lin, Region Parliament Speaker Tin Maung Tun and faculty members.
