Social Welfare Department dealt with more than 900 gender-based violences, including underage rape cases, since November 2016 till date, said Dr Win Myat Aye, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement at Myanmar National Committe for Women Affairs' meeting at the ministry on February 5.

“The department is winning more public trust and receiving more complaints. The department dealt with 940 cases since November 2016 till date and has provided 483 victims with Ks100,000 each for court expenses and 148 others with Ks 500,000 each for rehabilitation,” Said Dr Win Myat Aye.

The committee plays an important role in implementing the pledges included in the CEDAW and the Women Development National Level Strategic Plan (2013-2022), in accordance with four policies and 12 duties laid down by the All Myanmar Women Committee, he continued.

Social Welfare Department is mainly responsible for the solving violence against women. The department is drafting Law pertaining to violence against women as well as the Sex Workers Law and plans to submit these bills to parliament. Since 2016, the department has set up the round-the-clock help line to receive the complaints about the gender-based violence cases including underage rape cases, he said.

The department is working to protect migrant women and female workers from sexual insults, in cooperation with relevant organizations.

In performing the duties for discrimination against women and women development plans, the ministry needs to make more efforts to have harmony links between the union, region and state-level bodies, he said.
