News that towns and cities would be in lockdown and factories would close is not true, and there is no potential for a food shortage, said State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

She made the remark during her televised speech on the latest situation of COVID-19 at 7 pm on March 24.

“A rumour has spread that businesses, factories and exits and entrances of the towns and cities will close. Please don’t panic,” she said.

People are buying a huge amount of food and medicines. And running out of foods is not possible, she added.

“As the news emerged about two persons infected with COVID-19, some people rushed to markets to buy foods and medicines. Our food rations will no way run out. Crowds are more vulnerable to the infection. It is people who must try not to spread the virus. Metal stability of the people is important,” the State Counsellor commented.

She said the government would not close services, markets and shopping centres that are essential for the public, adding that only one member of a family should do shopping.
