MYAUNGMYA-State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will open Labutta(Pinlelay) Bridge in Ayeyawady Region today.

She will be also meeting the locals at the Sasana Beikman in Labutta Township.

In the past, the Labutta Bridge was a suspension bridge, now upgraded to as reinforced concrete.

“The bridge is very important to the locals in Labutta Township and neighbouring areas. In the past, it was a suspension bridge crossing the Pinlelay River. However, the government upgraded it to the reinforced-concrete bridge because there was a lack of durability. Now, the State Counsellor will open the Pinlelay bridge. She had visited Labutta Township by vessel about 30 years ago when I was the then General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD). As the locals from Labutta Township urged me to hold a meeting with the State Counsellor, I organized it. The meeting will be held after the opening ceremony of the Labutta(Pinlelay) Bridge,” said Kyaw Myint, Municipal Affairs Minister from Ayeyawady Region Government Committee.

It is the first time for Aung San Suu Kyi to visit Labutta Township for 30 years. She also attended the opening ceremony of Myaungmya Bridge held on April 1st.

During her visit, a local had called for the State Counsellor to come to the Labutta Township.

The State Counsellor had inspected other suspension bridges in Ayeyawady Region after the Myaungmya suspension bridge collapsed and upgraded Labutta (Pinlelay) suspension bridge, Shwe Laung suspension bridge and Wakema suspension bridge into reinforced-concrete bridges duirng her visit.
