State Counsellor attends Ground breaking ceremony of Myanmar-Korea Friendship Bridge (Dala)

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi attended the ground breaking ceremony of Myanmar-Korea Friendship Bridge (Dala) on December 24.

The construction of the bridge has begun and people from Korea will be constructing the bridge. The main construction will be undertaken by GS Engineering Construction Company. Minisstry of Construction of Myanamr will cooperate in construction. Local construction company Shwe Taung will be act as sub-constructor.



The main construction will be carried out by Korean experts. We are joining them to get technology transfer. This bridge will be longer than Aung Zeya and Maha Bandoola Bridge in Yangon,” said deputy director-general of the Ministry of Construction.



The project period will be 42 months and expected to  complete in 2022.

The bridge is a type of Cable Stayed Bridge and it will be 6,144 ft long and will have a water clearance of 160 ft height and it can withstand 75 tons of loads upon completion.

The cost of the project is to be US$ 188.174 million, of which US$137.833 million will come from a loan and US$ 30.341 million will come from the Union Government of Myanmar. The loan must be settled within 40 years and the interest rate is 0.01 percent.

Upon its completion, the bridge will provide quicker access between Yangon and Ayeyawady regions and Rakhine State.

Besides, the bridge will give a boost to traffic and trade flow between Yangon and several townships including Dala, Twantay, Kawhmu and Kungyangon and it will narrow the development gap in western areas of Yangon Region.

The launching ceremony was attended by Union Ministers Lt-Gen Kyaw Swe, Dr. Pe Myint, U Min Thu, U Thant Sin Maung, U Win Khaing and U Han Zaw, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Yangon Region Hluttaw Speaker, chairmen of the Hluttaw affairs committees, Deputy Minister for Construction U Kyaw Lin, ministers of the Yangon Region Government, MPs of Yangon Region Hluttaw, departmental heads, and officials of the ROK and local people.

“It is unbelievable that construction of long waited Dala Bridge is now come into reality. Through various challenges and hardships, the bridge construction project commenced. We thanked current and previous presidents, State Counsellor and people from Korea,” said a man living in Dala Township.
