About 41 million people die of non-communicable diseases every year in global countries including Myanmar, and among them are about 15 million people aged between 30 and 69, according to the Public Health Department.

Death rate from non-communicable diseases represents 71 percent of all other deaths. About 85 percent of those who die young of such diseases are from developing countries with low income. Main causes of deaths are heart attack, vascular diseases, cancer, chronic tuberculosis and diabetes.

The Ministry of Health and Sports is planning to adopt and implement a separate project to control and prevent non-communicable diseases more effectively. The project includes measures to control consumption of tobacco, alcohol, salt and sweets, avoid foods containing dyes and chemicals, do physical exercise and avoid sedentary lifestyle.

Non-communicable disease outbreaks are on the increase in Mekong sub-region countries including Myanmar, so cooperative measures such as research are being taken to control and wipe out such diseases.
