Staffs are chosen and assigned to appoint at new general cargo and container wharf in Thilawa Port and ships can dock at the wharf in April, according to Myanma Port Authority (MPA).

The construction work of general cargo wharf aided by Japanese ODA loan of US$200 million is finalized on December 14.

At the present, ships cannot dock at the wharf and the cargo handling will be done after it is being transferred to the company which can manage the wharf.

“We have finished the construction work and the selection process to appoint new staffs is now performing. The cargo handling will be done after it is being transferred to the company,” said Dr Myo Nyein Aye, Deputy General Manager of Myanma Port Authority (MPA).

The MPA developed 37 (200*750 meters) land plots in Thilawa harbour and invited local and foreign investors to implement the development of the harbour. It is building two general cargo wharves, dockyard buildings and cargo handling facilities using the ODA loan on No.25 and 26 land plots.

The project includes a steel jacket type main bridge, three smaller bridges, dockyard buildings, the purchase of two quay cranes, six RTGs, three reach stackers, six trailers and six chassis worth about US$200 million. The project was started in June 2016 and finished in December 2018.

Japanese and Myanmar governments signed agreements to loan for the first phase of the expansion of Yangon Port between 2013 and 2015 and Nippon Koei Company started consultation services in 2014. The company and MPA signed a mutual agreement in September 2015.

Tender to select the builder was held in 2015 and tender winner, a joint-ventured company of Toyo Construction and JFE Engineering and the MPA, signed the contract in December 2015.
