Sanitary landfill project under way at Hteinpin dumpsite

The sanitary landfill project will be implemented at Hteinpin dumpsite in Hlaingtharyar Township in Yangon, with the use of Fukuoka Method, according to Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe’s facebook.

The ceremony to hold Fukuoka Method Model Sanitary Landfill Seminar was held at the Yangon City Development Committee’s office in Botahtaung Township on the afternoon of November 30.

Fukuoka of Japan and Yangon of Myanmar have signed a MoU to make cooperation and provide technical assistance for the water supply, sewage treatment and garbage management, which are the parts of urban development.

In his opening speech, Mayor Maung Maung Soe said: “With the aim of reducing environmental impacts caused by the huge stockpile of disposals in Yangon, providing necessary technical assistance, promoting the skills of staff and working towards urban development, the landfill system being used in Fukuoka will be introduced as a pilot project. The YCDC will get sanitary landfill technology. There are many garbage compilation and refining systems. The YCDC will use the garbage treatment system suited to Yangon.”

The ceremony was attended by officials from the YCDC, Fukuoka City, the Japanese Embassy and the JICA Myanmar Office.

As a pilot project, one-hectare landfill project will be developed with the funds continued by the YCDC and the technical assistance by Fukuoka City.
