Four flood relief camps have been opened in Belin Township in Mon State as the water level of Belin River is climbs closer to its danger level due to heavy downpours, according to the authorities.

According to the measurement at 12.30 pm on July 9, the water level of Belin River reached 977 cm. Its danger level is 1,022 cm. Yesterday, the rainfall stood at 3.36 inches. The families living near the bank of river have been moved to the flood relief camps. One post-primary schools and two primary schools were closed since July 9. 

Ko Hsan Naing from the township social organization said: “Currently, the water level continues to rise. On July 8, all organizations in the township held a meeting on a plan to deal with the natural disaster. The rescue teams have been formed and relief supplies, stored.”

The villages in Natgyi village-tract on the upstream of Belin River, have been supplied with food available for seven days.  

Ko Paye Sone Aung, a local said: “Currently, Yangon-Mawlamyine road is not under water. We are still monitoring the situation.”

Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced that according to the measurement at 9.30 am on July 9, the water level of Belin River is expected to exceed its danger level within the next 24 hours. 

Due to the rain-triggered floods, 14 schools and government offices in some low-laying villages and wards in Kyauktaga Township in Bago Region have been closed since the morning of July 9. 

San Aung, a resident from Sartike ward said: “Our ward is flooded due to the blockage of creeks and channels and fewer number of drainage channels. No officials come to visit our ward. Well-wishers donate foods for the flood victims.
