Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing stated that while Taninthayi Region possesses rich natural resources and fertile land, regional development continues to face constraints due to localized instability and security vulnerabilities fueled by political agitation. He made the remarks on October 13 during a meeting at Pale Eikayi Hall in Dawei with regional officials, town elders, and local entrepreneurs.
Addressing attendees, the President noted that regional vulnerabilities stem partly from gaps in education, which leave communities vulnerable to misleading narratives from politically motivated actors. Stressing that lasting national progress depends on an educated workforce capable of critical thinking, he reiterated the government’s focus on stability and educational reform.
Turning to the regional economy, he highlighted Taninthayi’s strong potential in perennial crops such as oil palm, rubber, durian, and cocoa, urging continuous agricultural research alongside expanded livestock and feed production to stabilize local food prices and elevate regional GDP.
To accelerate economic momentum, major infrastructure upgrades are actively being pursued across the region. Runway and terminal improvements at Dawei Airport are underway to handle higher traffic volumes, efforts continue toward realizing the Dawei Deep-Sea Port Project to generate local employment, and plans are being carried out to build a dual-track coastal railway connecting Ye and Dawei to streamline passenger travel and freight logistics.
He further urged residents to leverage the area's coastal tourism assets by upholding civic discipline, public cleanliness, and traffic laws, while actively preserving Dawei’s cultural heritage and traditional identity.
Following the meeting, the President inspected local micro, small, and medium enterprise product exhibitions.
Earlier that morning, he visited a local military hospital in Dawei, where he offered words of encouragement, presented cash rewards, and provided supplies to injured security personnel and hospital staff.
