The list of prisoners to be released on January 2 will not include political prisoners as well as the former police captain Moe Yan Naing serving a prison term for his involvement in the case of the two jailed Reuters reporters, said an official from Insein Prison on January 1.

Rumours have surfaced that Moe Yan Naing and other nortorious figures such as Michael Kyaw Myint and Naung Naung will be among those prisoners due to be released on January 2.

"It's not true. The release of prisoners is as usual in line with the rules and regulations. This is not a special case. Former police captain Moe Yan Naing will not be included,” said the prison official.

The police officer who used to meet the two Reuters reporters regarding the Indin Village controversy in Rakhine State was arrested and imprisoned for one year after being charged with the police disciplinary law. His family was forced almost immediately to move from their staff housing in Nay Pyi Taw.

Moe Yan Naing testified in court as a plaintiff witness in the case of the two Reuters reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. At the 14th court hearing, he revealed that police corporal Naing Lin handed secret documents to the two reporters at police brigadier general Tin Ko Ko's command.

Moe Yan Naing revealed the truth saying that every policeman regardless of rank has his dignity.
