The Paunglaung Dam in Nay Pyi Taw is currently overflowing at a height of 2.29 feet, and there is no concern about the dam's strength and safety, and there have been 18 cases of overflow due to overspill in the 21 years of its service life, according to sources.
On August 7, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung inspected the dam's strength, water storage, and overflow conditions of the Paunglaung Dam in Zeyathiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw, and ordered systematic work to be done for the safety of the dam based on the reports of officials.
The Paunglaung Dam has experienced 18 cases of overflow due to overspill in the 21 years of its service life. The highest overflow was in 2013 when the water level was 8.3 feet for 118 days. In 2024, the water level was increased to 11.87 feet for 68 days. The dam is currently overflowing at a height of 2.29 feet. With the reservoir now full, the four turbines in the hydroelectric plant can generate full power, providing sufficient water for growing winter and summer crops in the irrigated area. The overflow from the dam does not affect the strength of the dam or the safety of the area, so there is no need for concern from the public.
