The Union Parliament has approved the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo and Togolese Republic.

The parliamentary approval was made through voting during a session of Union Parliament held in Nay Pyi Taw on May 23 after nine members of parliament made their discussions and the Union Parliament made clarification.

"If countries want to make official contacts with each other, the establishment of diplomatic relations is fundamental. Then we have to coordinate matters to accredit ambassadors and open embassies if necessary. Establishing diplomatic ties does not mean opening embassies. We have just announced our plan to establish diplomatic relations with those countries," said Union Minister for International Cooperation Kyaw Tin said.

He added that focus is on choosing experienced ambassadors. The proposal was made as these three countries have interest in establishing diplomatic ties with Myanmar.

He said continued measures would be taken to issue joint statements by contacting the countries concerned.
