MYAUNGMYA-Over 100 people in Oakshitkalay village, Ngapudaw Township, Ayeyawady Region, were hospitalized from an outbreak of food poisoning on Sunday night.

Total of 116 people suffered from food poisoning and are now receiving medical treatment at Ngapudaw Township’s hospital.

Amongst the victims, a woman had low blood pressure and has been admitted to intensive care. The rest are in stable condition.

“A total of 116 were suffering from food poisoning. A donation ceremony was held in Oakshitkalay village, Ngapudaw Township, Ayeyawady Region. The donator treated the invited guests with the fried chicken noodle with cabbage. Later, the guests suffered from food poisoning. Those patients have all recovered. But, a woman had low blood pressure and she is now in intensive care. I arrived at the hospital as soon as I heard. Likewise, the administrator from Ngapudaw Township, the fire brigade including Red Cross association members arrived at the hospital. However, the Ngapudaw hospital can’t accommodate the hundreds of patients at the same time because the new building of the Ngapudaw hospital isn’t opened now. So, we took the beds for the patients from the new hospital and sent it to the old building. Now, the staff is giving full medical treatments to the patients,” MP Phyo Zaw Shwe from No.2 Constituency in Nagpudaw Township.

Following the incident, the Township FDA had retrieved samples of the food that the patients ate, sending it to the laboratory for examination.

Around ten percent of the World’s populations suffer from some form of food poisoning each year, and 420,000 people die annually, according to World Health Organization-WHO data.

In Myanmar, food poisoning sometimes occurs at the donation ceremonies as people cooking the meals don’t take the right precautions when preparing large amounts of meat, fish, and vegetables.
