A plan is under way to give rabies vaccines to one million dogs and cats in 2019-2021, according to a press conference on rabies vaccination in Yangon.

Dr. Phone Win from Mingalar Myanmar said: “As a pilot project, this rabies vaccination programs were conducted in Lewe and Bagan-NyaungU Townships. Under the project, we gave rabies vaccine shots to nearly 60,000 dogs within two months. We plan to give rabies vaccine to an average of 1,500 dogs a day starting this year. We have prepared for the supply of necessary medicines, equipment and trained staff. The project is expected to achieve success.”

Myanmar is striving to achieve the goal of becoming a rabies-free country by 2030, in accord with the objective of World Health Organization. To achieve this goal, FOUR PAWS International held talks with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation in October. Both sides signed a MoU on free rabies shots for one million dogs and cats during three years, at Sedona Hotel in Yangon on November 10.

Under the MoU, FOUR PAWS International will provide 500,000 rabies vaccines, foreign vets, experts and necessary equipment.

The rabies vaccination program will cover Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bago and Rakhine. A total of 100 vets from the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department and basic animal health staff will participate in the program. They will collect necessary rabies vaccines.
