Officials are investigating the newly dig tube well which emitted unidentified biogas in a compound of a house in Thanlyin Township on December 18, said MP Nay Lin Aung of No.1 Thanlyin Constituency.

The unknown kind of biogas emitted after the hole reached about 200 feet depth.

“Experts from Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) came to inspect the well and they advised us to make to emit the gas from a tube fitted to the air from the ground. They said it is a kind of biogas existed in the underground. They will send the sample of the gas to the lab to classify the kind of gas. The kind of gas is still unknown,” said the MP.

“Most of the gas emitted from the underground contains methane gas and it can burn easily. The smell of the gas is not strong. It mixed up with water and we fitted the pipes to about 30-feet height to emit the gas,” said the MP.

Policemen, firefighters and officials came to monitor the situation and they are waited the gas to stop emitting. The authorities warned people from about 100 feet all around not to use fire.

The authorities took the sample of the things emitted from the well and instructed not to remove the equipments from the well. Firefighters and policemen cleaned the mud from road and roofs using water and the gas stopped around 4:30 pm, said Hla Myint, house owner.

He said, “We dug about 140 feet at the first day and we dug today. We found water in 200 feet depth. So we removed the iron pipes and fixed plastic pumping pipes. We blew out the sand using a compressor. The pipes are bounced after about five minutes and the gas leaked out. We cannot say gas as it contained air, water and mud. It stopped around 4:30 pm.”
