Nomination of Bagan on UNESCO list to help develop tourism industry

The country will get a greater glory and see more tourism industry development after the ancient Bagan region is added to the UNESCO’s cultural heritage list, said Thein Lwin, Deputy Director-General of Department of the Archaeological Research and National Museum,

The Myanmar Tourist Guides Association held a event to welcome the nomination of Bagan on the UNESCO’s list in 2019 and discuss the facts about Bagan, at the Secretariat (Ministers’ Office) in Yangon on May 26.

Since 1996, Myanmar has been working on the nomination of Bagan on the UNESCO’s cultural heritage list. This attempt has failed due to the lack of designated facts. The Department of the Archaeological Research and National Museum again tried to nominate it in 2014.  In 2018, the UNESCO accepted Myanmar’s nomination as there were required facts and data. It will be decided at the 43rd UNESCO’s world heritage conference to be held in Azerbaijan from June 30 to July 10.

The nomination will bring about a lot of benefits. It will help develop the tourism industry, thereby contributing to more employment opportunities for locals. Most importantly, we need to think about the ways of how to maintain the sustainable development and to hand down it to our future generations, he continued.

The three Pyu ancient cities were recognized by the UNESCO as the world heritage sites in 2014. Plan is underway to nominate Mrauk U region in Rakhine State on the UNESCO’s world heritage list, in 2020.
