NAPYITAW - Nearly all members of United Nationalities Alliance (UNA), including the Arakan League for Democracy-ALD and Shan Nationalities League for Democracy-SNLD, will not attend the meeting of the new Union Election Commission (UEC) to be held in Nay Pyi Taw today.

The UNA was formed with 13 political parties, of which most are ethnic parties.

“We didn’t attend the meeting in accordance with our party’s stance. Our party aims to repel dictatorship. They[Tatmadaw] said that they maintained the state power. Nevertheless, their actions are leading to dictatorship. So, we didn’t attend the new UEC’s meeting,” said Myo Kyaw, ALD’s General Secretary.

After the military seized power on February 1st, a new UEC led by Chairman Thein Soe was formed. Later, the new UEC sent invitation letters to the political parties to hold a meeting at the UEC office in Nay Pyi Taw on February 26th.

The news spread that some political parties will attend the meeting. But, some ethnic political parties will not meet with the new UEC.

“Our political sense is very different with military-coup council’s activities. So, we didn’t attend the new UEC’s meeting,” said SNLD’s general secretary Sai Leik.

The new UEC’s invitation letter only reported that it was just meeting with political parties.
