No negotiation between Gov’t and UEC to date election campaign period

YANGON- President Office’s Spokesperson Zaw Htay said in a virtual press conference on May 30th that there was no negotiation between the government and the Union Election Commission (UEC) to date the election campaign period.

“The UEC is good with its answer. There is no negotiation with us,” said Spokesperson Zaw Htay.

He also said that the UEC had studied holding elections in some international countries including South Korea during COVID-19 outbreak. Moreover, the UEC was taking the lessons from the international to designate election campaign period and voting.   

The officials from UEC said that the General Election-2020 may be held by the end of year and it may be held in November according to the previous election 2015.

Although there are only five months left for holding of General Election-2020, the UEC has yet to announce the election date, campaign period and the timetable for submitting the list of candidates.

Myint Naing, one of the members of UEC said that it will be announced two months prior. They had announced in advance four months for the 2015 election.

The General Election-2015 was held on November 8th. The UEC designated date for submitting the candidates list from July 20th to August 8th. Moreover, the election campaign period was designated as 60 days before election.
