The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) held a meeting with the People’s Party (PP) led by Ko Ko Gyi, at the NLD’s headquarters in Yangon on June 17.

This is the first ever meeting between the NLD and the PP after the PP has got the party registration. The meeting mainly focused on cooperation between the two parties, according to the spokespersons of the two parties.

Dr. Myo Nyunt, the spokesperson of the NLD said: “This is the preliminary meeting. No agreement is reached at the meeting. This is the introduction as we are democracy parties. We have a plan to make close cooperation in the future.”

The NLD’s CEC members Nyan Win, Han Thar Myint, Thein Oo and Dr. Myo Nyunt attended the meeting. The People’s Party Chair Ko Ko Gyi, Vice-chair Min Zeya, General Secretary Ye Naing Aung and joint general-secretary Kyaw Kyaw Htwe and Kyaw Kyaw Soe were also present at the call.

According to the statement by the PP, both sides cordially exchanged views on the NLD’s preparations for the charter amendment in parliament, the peace-making process and the PP’s party formation.

Ye Naing Aung, the joint general-secretary of the People’s Party said: “We did not make in-depth discussions about any matter. The main focus is on cooperation.”

The Union Election Commission allowed the People’s Party to register as a political party in August, last year.
