Myanma Railways is building a new locomotive shed in Insein Township, Yangon Region, that can repair and maintain around 100 carriages daily.

The new locomotive shed project is part of the Yangon circular railway improvement project and will maintain the new carriages purchased from Japan.

The old Insein locomotive shed is repairing and maintain 37 railway carriages every day. Upon completion of the new project, up to 98 carriages can be serviced. Moreover, very old carriages will be replaced with air-conditioned ones.

"We have Insein circular locomotive shed. There are 11 railway tracks. Operative carriages are kept within the shed compound at night. We take maintenance measures for those carriages such as repairing, servicing, checking and filling fuel. Every day, we run about 200 times. Now, we are building a new locomotive shed near the old one. When the circular railroad improvement project completes, more new railway coaches will come. We will do maintenance tasks for them," said an official from Myanma Railways.

The Yangon circular railway improvement project is set to finish by 2022. Upon completion, interval time between circular trains will be about 10 or 12 minutes. Travelling time around the city will be cut and about 240,000 railway passengers can be transported.
