Myanmar has yet to implement a fish auction market project in Myeik of Taninthayi Township although over a year has passed since the parliamentary approval from the majority of MPs, said Dr Win Myint, secretary of the upper house committee for agriculture, livestock and fishery development at the largest ever fishery symposium held at Myanmar Fisheries Federation headquarters.

The project aims to create local job opportunities and help develop the national economy.

"Our committee has urged the government to open a fish auction market as quickly as possible because the majority of votes had been acquired in parliament to reopen the market which has been closed down. The ministry concerned is making preparations. However, the project have been unable to be implemented for over a year. So, the upper house government guarantees, pledges and undertakings vetting committee is discussing the matter with the ministry concerned," said Dr Win Myint.

Win Kyaing, general secretary of Myanmar Fisheries Federation, said a fish auction market existed in Myeik but it was not successful due to a lack of certain market qualities

"As we don't have a fish auction market now, it is  only a buyer market, not a seller market. We must try to establish a market in our country. We need a fish auction market. The market must be supported with cold-storage rooms, processing factories, ice factories and others. With those supporting facilities, we will be able to establish an auction market," said Win Kyaing.
