The Ministry of Commerce announced on February 21, 2025, that Myanmar nationals working abroad will be allowed to import electric vehicles or electric motorcycles under a special program, utilizing five percent of their salaries or other income remitted through banking channels.

The initiative aims to promote the use of electric vehicles within the country and support environmental conservation efforts. Myanmar nationals working abroad who send their salaries or other earnings back to Myanmar via banking channels will be eligible under this special program to import electric vehicles or electric motorcycles.

According to the policy, "Regular income earners (including seafarers) and others with income who remit at least USD 50,000 annually will be permitted to import electric vehicles or electric motorcycles equivalent to 5% of the total amount remitted, at a rate of one vehicle per year." Eligible individuals can import vehicles individually, and if the value of the vehicle does not meet the required amount for an individual import, group imports will also be permitted. This was initially outlined in a notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce on October 26, 2023.

The program allowing the purchase and importation of electric vehicles or electric motorcycles began being calculated from October 16, 2023. For further details, individuals can contact the phone number 067-3408433 or email [email protected]
