The ministry plans to produce 15,000 tons of teak in 2018-2019 fiscal year, said Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation.

The government enacted the directive for the community-owned forest plantation since 1995 in order to encourage the cooperation of locals in the administration of forest resources. Plans are under way to set up 2.27 million acres of the community-owned forest administered by the locals by 2030, according to the Forest Department.

In 2016, the ministry updated that directive in order to fulfill the needs and interests of locals. As the Forest Law was enacted in 2018, the directive was amended, on May 8, 2019.

Myanmar is carrying out conservation of biodiversity in the agricultural sector, in accordance with the long-term strategic plans described in the UN Biodiversity Agreement. The Forest Department is working on the establishment and conservation of natural areas in order to conserve the ecosystem. The government has conserved 5.85 per cent of the country’s total area as the natural areas. Plan is under way to extend the conservation area to 10 per cent in the long run, the minister added.

To mitigate climate change and ensure the long-term ecosystem, Myanmar is implementing the 20-year plans for Myanmar forest rehabilitation and the habitats and biodiversity rehabilitation.

In addition to it, the international cooperation is required. The conservation of regional bio-diversities can be carried out by drafting the plans based on the UN CBD’s post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. Myanmar will promote the combination of environments and biodiversities in the agricultural sector by capacity building, creating a better environment for the works, sharing knowledge and technologies, said Minister Ohn Win, at the Regional Consultative Meeting on Biodiversity Mainstreaming across Agricultural Sectors for Asia and the Pacific, held in Bangkok in Thailand from 17 to 19 July.
