Myanmar to donate 200 tons of rice to coronavirus-hit China

Union Minister for International Cooperation Kyaw Htin met Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai on February 14 in Nay Pyi Taw and discussed Myanmar’s donation of 200 tons of rice to coronavirus-hit China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

“We don’t know about exact date of the donation. We are still coordinating as to whether the rice will be transported by ship or through border. But we will try to send it as quickly as possible,” said Aung Ko, director general of the Political Department.

The minister praised the Chinese people for their united efforts to fight and control 2019 novel coronavirus under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, and expressed his belief that the problem could be overcome.

The minister also expressed thanks to the Chinese government for its assistance and cooperation in evacuating Myanmar students from the city of Wuhan, said the press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Both sides also discussed strengthening of bilateral relations and cooperation and China’s continue assistance in Myanmar’s efforts for peace and reconciliation, repatriation of those fleeing from Myanmar and their resettlement.

 In meeting with the Chinese charge d’affaires on February 3, Union Minister Kyaw Tin said Myanmar is willing to offer help to the Chinese government in its effort for coronavirus control.

President Win Myint sent President Xi Jinping a message of sympathy for the deaths of Chinese people caused by the coronavirus that originated from Wuhan on February 3.

According to figures till February 14, the virus killed around 1,400 people and infected around 60,000, most of them from China.
