The Myanmar Passport Issuing Office has announced a new fee structure for passport applications. Effective September 1, the cost for obtaining a passport has increased from 35,000 kyats to 40,000 kyats.

For those who scheduled their appointments online before September, the new rate applies as well. Individuals who had previously paid the old fee of 35,000 kyats will now need to pay an additional 5,000 kyats at the reception counters to cover the difference.

An applicant from Yangon expressed frustration over the change, stating, "Even though I paid the previous rate, I now have to pay an extra 5,000 kyats. It used to be 30,000 and 50,000 kyats before; now it is 40,000 kyats. I made my appointment online earlier and am still being charged the additional amount."

For those intending to work abroad, the Ministry advises applying for a Passport for Job (PJ) type, which facilitates obtaining labor rights in foreign countries. Additionally, an Overseas Worker Identification Card (OWIC) should be obtained from the Ministry of Labor to ensure legal employment abroad.

At Yangon International Airport, a joint team comprising the Ministry of Labor, Special Bureau for Investigation, Anti-Human Trafficking Police, and Aviation Police is responsible for verifying travelers with PV passports. These travelers must present hotel booking, return flight tickets and proof of sufficient funds for their stay.

There are seven types of passports issued by the Myanmar Passport Issuing Office, which are Passport for Visit - PV; Work (Passport for Job – PJ); Education (Passport for Education - PE); Business (Passport for Business – PB); Religion (Passport for Religious – PR); Dependent (Passport for Dependent – PT);  and Passport for Seaman - PS.
