Daw Than Than Swe, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM), received an Indian delegation led by Indian ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Vinay Kumar in Nay Pyi Taw on July 20.
They discussed matters relating to direct payment in Indian Rupees/ Myanmar Kyats in bilateral trade. The discussion focused on allowing the Indian Rupees obtained by any means to be opened in the accounts of Myanmar banks to be opened at the Punjab National Bank. Among the points in the mutual agreement (concept notes) are the continuation of certain issues and the acceptance and inclusion of remittances from foreign workers in India in a specially opened account.
They also discussed the points of agreement between Myanmar and India to support and provide technical assistance in anti-money laundering issues.
Indian ambassador to Myanmar also met U Ko Ko Hlaing, Union Minister for International Cooperation. They discussed promotion of existing friendly bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries, India’s humanitarian assistance as well as provision of necessary construction materials for repair and rebuild works in Cyclone Mocha hit areas, possibility of expanding India’s investment as well as exporting rice, and beans and pulses to India and progress on India-Myanmar-Thai Trilateral Highway project.
Similarly, Union Minister for Social Welfare, relief and resettlement Dr. Thet Thet Khine met the Indian ambassador at the ministry on July 17.
During the meeting, they discussed matters including India’s scholarship assistance, and humanitarian aid for the areas affected by Cyclone Mocha, the accepting of internally displaced persons (IDPs), human trafficking issues, and economic development projects being implemented in Rakhine State as per the Myanmar-India MoU.
They also exchanged views on the humanitarian aid provided by India for Cyclone Mocha victims, the visit of the ERAT Team representatives from the AHA center to the cyclone-affected areas of Rakhine State, relief supplies from the AHA center, and the rehabilitation of human trafficking victims and individuals who have successfully overcome drug addiction.
