Myanmar Barcode Association (MBA) officially launched Myanmar’s own barcode 883, at the UMFCCI (headquarters) in Yangon on 22 February.

U Wai Phyo, Chair of the MBA said: “Myanmar was unable to use its own barcode as it was not a GS1 member. That’s why, Myanmar had to use barcode numbers of other countries. The worst thing is nothing appears when the products are scanned. That’s why, the UMFCCI introduced GS 1 system in Myanmar, in cooperation with its brother associations.”

The UMFCCI formed the 18-member MBA by combining Myanmar Industrial Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar Retailers Association, Myanmar Foodstuff Producers and Exporters Association.

The MBA applied to GS 1 Member Association at GS1 Global Office (Headquarters) in Belgium in May, 2019.  Myanmar was officially recognized as a member at GS 1 General Assembly in Istanbul in Turkey. Myanmar’s own barcode number is 883.

Local entrepreneurs can buy world-recognized barcode numbers for their products at the MBA in UMFCCI.

U Zaw Min Win, President of the UMFCCI said: “Local entrepreneurs face difficulty exporting their products to international markets as there is no label meeting international standards. Thanks to own barcode, Myanmar can enter the international supply chain system.”

Dr. Aung Thein, chair of Myanmar Industrial Entrepreneurs Association said: “Myanmar can export its products to international markets using its country code and own barcode. There will be no difficulty in scanning barcode numbers at ware house management system, after sale services system, especially supermarkets and stores.”
