Myanmar forms social media monitoring team to counter terrorists: official

Myanmar is formed social media monitoring team to counter terrorists, who are using messengers and twitter to share information between them, said Kyaw Myo, Deputy Minister for Transportation and Communications.

“The intention to form the social media monitoring team is to gather information from the terrorists. We encountered terrorism in Rakhine State. We are implementing it for the safety of the state,” he said.

Moreover open source intelligence (OSINT) is used by business enterprises, defence, security and rules of law organizations and government departments as well as criminals. International government used it widely from 2014 after 9/11 attack in 2011, he said.

The task carried out by the social media monitoring team is open source intelligence used internationally and the OSINT is data collected from social media and other websites to be used in an intelligence context to take action on them, he said.
