Myanmar establishes diplomatic ties with Benin

YANGON-The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced that Myanmar established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Benin as of July 2nd .

Benin is the 122nd country to establish diplomatic ties with Myanmar.

The MOFA said that upholding the UN Charter and the principles of International Law, in line with the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, as the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Republic of Benin are willing to promote bilateral relations and cooperation, the full diplomatic relations between the two countries has been established as of 2nd July.

Ambassador Hau Do Suan, Myanmar Permanent Representative to the UN and Ambassador Jean-Claude Felix do Rego, Benin Permanent Representative signed the joint statement on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and Benin at the office of Myanmar Permanent Representative to the UN, New York on July 2nd.

 Permanent Secretary Myint Thu said at a press conference held in Nay Pyi Taw on May 24th that plans were underway to establish ties with the three African nations: Benin in western Africa, Congo in southern Africa and Togo in western Africa aiming to promote diplomatic relations with African countries.

The Union Parliament had approved the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo and Togolese Republic.

The parliamentary approval was made through voting during a session of Union Parliament held in Nay Pyi Taw on May 23 after nine members of parliament made their discussions and the Union Parliament made clarification.

"If countries want to officially communicate with each other, the establishment of diplomatic relations is fundamental. Then we have to coordinate matters to accredit ambassadors and open embassies if necessary. Establishing diplomatic ties does not mean opening embassies. We have just announced our plan to establish diplomatic relations with those countries," said Union Minister for International Cooperation Kyaw Tin said.
