Myanmar has sent about 1,000 workers to Thailand under the zero-cost system, according to the office of Myanmar labour attaché in Bangkok in Thailand on March 13.

There are five factories in Thailand, which recruit Myanmar workers under this system.

The number of workers sent under this system has reached around 1,000 until March since 2018.

San Maung Oo, the labour affairs officer in Bangkok said: “Last year, the country sent about 400 workers to Adidas and Nike factories. An electronic factory employed about 600 workers. There are overseas employment agencies which send workers.”

Plans are under way to dispatch Myanmar workers to Thailand.

Myanmar workers can go to Thailand officially via the government-recognized employment agencies as well as under a MoU system.

Those who want to go to Thailand under a MoU system shall pay a service fee of Ks 150,000 in Myanmar and Baht 5,000 in Thailand.

Those who want to go to Thailand under the zero-cost system do not need to pay any service fee in Myanmar, and they shall pay expenditures only for passport, medical checkup costs, in Thailand.

Most of Myanmar workers are migrating to Thailand. There are nearly four million Myanmar workers in Thailand, most of whom are working in the fishery and factories.
