Myanmar Railways (MR) plans to sell train tickets via online after the completion of Yangon-Mandalay railroad upgrading project (phase-2) in 2023-2024, said Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications U Kyaw Myo.

The ministry is working on a plan to shift to the online ticket sale system using the real-time information system, he said.

Currently, Myanma Railways (MR) is unable to start the online ticket sale system as it has no network server which can cover the whole country. In order to upgrade passenger services, the phase-2 of the Yangon-Mandalay railroad upgrading project being carried out with the use of Japan’s ODA loan since 1 October, 2019, includes ticket reservation system and train information system. The MR is preparing the tender documents for the project and will invite a tender in 2020-2021, he added.

The MR sells upper class train tickets three days ahead and ordinary class train tickets one day ahead. For more convenience of passengers, the MR has opened public relation centers at all railway stations, he said.
