Monsoon will be later than expected as southwest wind is not strong, said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Director General of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

“The southwest wind will enter Kawthoung around May 22 and it will reach southern areas of Myanmar on May 24. It will be later than we expected,” he said.

Moreover the air currents from the east is sometimes disappeared and sometimes emerged. It is showing signs of the monsoon season, he said.

They have 13 facts to become a monsoon season and one of the main facts is the wind speed from southwest. Two millimeters and above rainfall with needs to pour down in southern areas of Myanmar. Upper air currents need to occur in northern areas of Myanmar. They also observed the situation of anti-cyclone process, he said.

Southwest monsoon is likely to onset in southern areas of Myanmar between May 21 and 23, deltaic areas between May 24 and 28 and central areas of Myanmar between May 29 and June 3. During this monsoon period, southwest monsoon wind will be moderate. A low pressure area may form over the South Bay of Bengal. Weather will be partly cloudy to cloudy over the Andaman Sea and South Bay and partly cloudy elsewhere over the Bay of Bengal.

Rain or thundershower will be expected above normal in upper Sagaing and Taninthayi regions, Kachin and Mon states, about normal in lower Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon and Ayeyawady regions, Shan, Chin, Rakhine, Kayah and Kayin states.
