Miss Universe controversy: Myanmar Theatrical Association denounces "insulting" costume design

The Myanmar Theatrical Association (MTA) is up in arms over the costume design chosen to represent Myanmar at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant.

The controversial design, shared on social media platform FAE (Fashion & Artistry Exhibition Page) on March 16, combines a traditional theatrical actor's headdress with a woman's gown.

The MTA strongly objects to the design, criticizing it for being a disrespectful mashup of cultural elements. They argue that fusing a male theatrical headdress with a feminine gown is not only nonsensical but also diminishes the significance of both cultural garments. The association views this as an insult to Myanmar's traditional artistic heritage.

The MTA has issued a formal statement condemning the use of the costume and has threatened legal action if it is worn at the pageant to represent Myanmar. They aim to enforce compliance with both the association's rules and regulations and broader Myanmar cultural norms.
