Mine explosion and gunfire attack on Yangon-Mandalay railway line

On the morning of March 27, a mine explosion and gunfire attack targeted a security patrol train on the Yangon-Mandalay railway line between Nyaung Chayhtauk and Kywepwe Stations.

At 7:36 a.m., the RGC-125 train, conducting security checks on the Phyu-Taungoo section, departed from Nyaung Chayhtauk Station. By 7:50 am, as the train reached mile 144/10-11, gunfire was launched from the Yangon-Mandalay Highway on the west side of the tracks. The attack shattered a rear locomotive window and damaged the rail frame, but the driver and security personnel remained unharmed.

Later, at 9:15 am, another attack occurred on the railway line in Oktwin Township, Bago Region. A mine explosion  occurred at milepost 144/10-11 on the up Railway Line, between Nyaung Chayhtauk and Kywepwe  Stations, caused damage to about 10 feet of the western track, displacing paving stones and concrete slabs.

Following the incident, Myanmar Railways staff worked to restore the damaged section. Repairs were completed by 6:00 pm, allowing the up Railway Line to resume normal operations.

Since February 2021, Myanmar Railways has recorded 80 mine explosions on railway tracks and station areas, 175 on railway bridges and tracks, and 16 arson attacks on station buildings and staff residences.
