A passenger vehicle traveling on the Yangon-Mawlamyine road was attacked with mines near Kamar Saing village in Thaton Township, Mon State, around 8 p.m. on September 1. 

The attack resulted in the deaths of two men and injuries to five passengers, according to locals and social welfare organizations.

The vehicle, driven by 37-year-old Phyo Wai Kyaw, was carrying nine passengers, including the conductor, en route from Myawady Township in Kayin State to Yangon Region. 

The attack occurred near milepost 133/6 and 133/7.

“There were ten people on board, including the driver and conductor. The passengers were from Thanatpin and Tarwa townships in Bago Region. Among them were two children—a four-month-old baby and a four-year-old child. The driver and one passenger from Tarwa Township died at the scene,” said a local resident.

Ambulances from Thaton-based Relief and Rescue teams transported the bodies and injured passengers to Thaton District People’s Hospital.

This attack is part of a broader pattern of violence on the Yangon-Mawlamyine road, where vehicles, including trucks, have been frequently targeted with gunfire, and bridges have been attacked with mines. 

On August 17, an unidentified armed group attacked security forces stationed at Ma Saw bridge near Taungkalay village in Belin Township, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to at least five others, according to locals.
