Excessive amounts of particles were detected in the south of Letpadaung copper mining project in Salingyi Township in Yinmarbin District in Sagaing Region, said Kyaw Soe Lin, assistant director of Sagaing Region Environmental Conservation Department.

Wanbao Company, in charge of the mining operations, has promised that it will use a acid dropping method instead of acid spraying method.

“I found the company is using acid spraying method in the mining site during my field inspection. According to the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC), the company has promised not to use acid spraying method,” he added.

The Sagaing Region Environmental Conservation Department Office has directed the company not to use that method. The violation has been reported to the Sagaing Region Government.

A total of 13,855 acres of sesame, green gram, corn and sunflower plantations near Letpadaung copper mining project were damaged.
