YANGON- Dr Myo Nyunt, a spokesperson for the National League for Democracy (NLD), said that ther Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr Zaw Myint Maung, who is also NLD’s vice-chairman 2, suffer from blood cancer.

Dr Myo Nyunt replied to the queries raised by the media after the 99th National Day ceremony held at the NLD’s headquarters in Yangon yesterday.

“At present, he[Dr Zaw Myint Maung] is taking a break. We hope that he will be able to return to his duty soon,” said Dr Myo Nyunt.

When Dr Zaw Myint Maung had sought medical treatment in Thailand,  Mandalay Region Electricity and Construction Minister Zarni Aung was serving as acting regional Chief Minister, temporarily taking over Dr Zaw Myint Maung’s duties.

Dr Zaw Myint Maung was elected lawmaker in the election-2015 representing No.1 Constituency of Amarapura Township, Mandalay Region and he was also elected as the Mandalay Region Chief Minister.

He left for Thailand to seek medical treatment after attending the meeting of government officials, MPs and other NLD members in Yangon on October 24th.

Now, he can’t serve his duties nearly one month.

Dr Zaw Myint Maung, aged-68, is three times elected MP, elected in 1990 election, 2012 by-election and the 2015 general election. Moreover, he was sentenced to long-term imprisonment and also was a veteran political prisoner.

Some NLD’s officials and MPs reviewed that he had suffered the blood cancer because he was jailed for 19 years under the previous military regime.

As NLD’s chairperson Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Vice Chairman-1 U Win Myint are now serving the duties of the Union Government, they have no chance to interfere the NLD’s duties in accordance with the law.

Therefore, Dr Zaw Myint Maung became the most responsible person for the ruling NLD.

Moreover, he was elected the NLD’s vice chairman-2 at the Second Nationwide NLD’s Party Conference held on June 24th, last year and acted as the NLD’s central executive secretary member.
