PETALING JAYA: (The Star/ANN) - The Finance Ministry has reinstated the cost of living aid (Bantuan Sara Hidup or BSH) for singles.

The ministry said about three million eligible single Malaysians would get RM100 each, and that it would be credited into their bank account in March.

In a statement on Tuesday (Feb 19), its Minister Lim Guan Eng said this would involve RM300mil in government funds.

Lim said the decision was made following feedback from Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He added that the BSH aid for singles this year would be reviewed again and presented to the Cabinet for a decision.

The Bantuan Sara Hidup, formerly known as BR1M, was aimed at providing financial aid to the low-income group in Malaysia.

Previously, single individuals above 21 years old and earning less than RM2,000 a month could receive cash handouts of RM450 but the category was abolished.

In an immediate reaction, Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin urged the government to reinstate the RM450 cash handout for singles.
