Nearly 200 locals staged a protest in Yinmabin Township in Sagaing Region on December 29, demanding compensations for the lands confiscated by Myanmar Yang Tse Copper Company.

The protestors marched from Kankone village to the office of Myanmar Yang Tse Company. In addition, they also demanded the supply of water from Chindwin River, for Kankone village.

Ko Tint Aung Soe, a local from Kankone village said: “The authorities did not deal with the problem. We are not fully satisfied with the previous solution. There is a delay in solving land disputes. The government does not interfere in it and neither does the committee. The problem is the authorities are dealing with the problems outside the copper project without solving the inside problem. We stage a protest as the land dispute faces a delay.”

According to the report of Letpadaung Copper Mining Investigation Commission led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, 6253.04 acres of lands from Sabei and Kyaesin Mountains, were seized for the copper mining project.
