Pado Saw Ta Do Hmu, general secretary of Karen National Union (KNU), has been chosen as representative of the Peace Process Steering Team (PPST) formed with leaders of the ethnic armed groups that have signed the nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA), said KNU central executive committee member Pado Mann Nyein Maung on November 22.

The new appointment was made in place of KNU chairman General Saw Mutu Say Poe.

"Yes, it is true duty assignment has been changed. It was decided during our emergency meeting held from 6th to 10th (this month)," said Pado Mann Nyein Maung.

Asked about the reason, he said he had no authority to say as it was confidential within their organization.

KNU, Restoration Council of Shan State, All Burma Student Democratic Front, Chin National Front, Arakan Liberation Party, Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, Karen National Union/Karenn National Liberation Army (Peace Council) and Pao National Liberation Organization signed the NCA on October 15, 2015.

Then, PPST was formed with leaders of those eight signatories and KNU's General Saw Mutu Say Poe was chosen as leader of PPST. After the replacement, who will be the PPST leader is still unknown.

Moreover, New Mon State Party and Lahu Democratic Union that became NCA signatories in February this year are also PPST meetings.

KNU has issued a statement saying that it would suspend official meetings on the ongoing peace process. And it would try to seek solutions through informal talks.
